For 5 years, Russ worked as a flight attendant for American Trans Air. He also worked as a recruiter for a biotec company as well as companies in the medical field. He was a people-person, very politically minded, concerned with eviromental problems. He loved nature.
Survivors include his parents, Charles (Tod) and Cheryl Crone of Washington; sister Kelly Hearn and husband Gibson, niece Kristen, nephew Todd, all of Farmington, NH, one aunt, one uncle and wife, and a number of cousins.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, one uncle and one cousin.
I just now, today saw Russ' obituary here and I'm so very sad to read it. On August 20, 2004, Russ met me to a cafe on Market Street in SF, sat me down, and proceeded to tell me, with that exacting clarity he possessed, that my life was a total disaster, and I needed to get sober. Fast. For some reason, I listened. I can still hear him talking to me. To say he made a HUGE IMPACT on my life would be an understatement - he saved me. The life I have now began with Russ and his commitment to me seeing my life objectively. I've stayed sober since. My deepest sympathies and heartfelt gratitude to Russ' family. I carry him with me always.scott fairbanks

The moment Russ and I became friends was the first time we met at Central College. We were roommates, too, and neighbors, in the Mens French House in the Wing International Center. I remember he worked at Hy-Vee while I was working a few different on campus jobs. I called him Russywussy, and he named me Jeffyweffy. I visited him twice in San Francisco, and have missed him ever since. My condolences to Kelly and the whole family. I wish I had been able to express my sentiments sooner. Warmly, Jeff Haarsmajefflpnba@gmail.com.

Russ was a close friend of mine for years in San Francisco. We shared many good times and meals at my beloved Noe Valley cottage. He spun tales and enjoyed life - was a top notch BBQ-er and caretaker for me (kind of friend who brings chicken when you're ill) and my garden. I heard many stories of his early years in Iowa and love for his family- qualities he admired in each relative. Russ was kind, thoughtful, curious and silly in a good way.So sad to hear of his passing -the universe will miss his gentle soul.My sympathies to all.

My sincere condolences to Russ' family in Iowa and to his family and many friends in SanFrancisco. Our loss is great but our lives are so much richer for having known, Russ; charming, engaging, and always caring. Sharing dinners, planting gardens, repairing houses, laughing, and enjoying his homemade cookies; that's how I will always think of Russ. Thank you for touching our lives, Russ, we will miss you and love you, always. Peace, my friend.

All of Russ' friends in San Francisco share the deep pain of his passing. Russ was intelligent, kind, loyal, sensitive, silly, and very much loved. There is a gaping wound in my soul and my heart aches for Tod and Cheryl; the Hearn family; and Russ' extended extended family in Iowa. With Deepest Condolences, Jim Kelly London
