Craig Stauffer

A Mass of Christian Burial for Craig L. Stauffer, 42, of Wayland, will be held Monday, August 1, 2016 at 10:00 am at the St. James Catholic Church in Washington with Father Bernie Weir officiating.  Burial will follow at the Wayland Cemetery.  Visitation will be held Sunday, July 31, beginning with a Rosary at 3:00, followed by visitation until 7:00 pm at the Beatty Funeral Home in Washington.  Memorial donations may be directed to the family.  Craig Stauffer died Wednesday, July 27, 2016 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics following a five year health struggle.

Craig Lee Stauffer was born December 21, 1973 in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, the son of John and Rachael (Whaley) Stauffer.  He graduated from WACO High School in 1992 and attended Iowa Wesleyan and Coe College.  Craig was involved in FFA and 4H, was an Eagle Scout and a Vigil Member of the Order of The Arrow.  His junior year of high school he served as a page in the Iowa House of Representatives.  Craig worked as a telephone technician in Wayland and at State Long Distance Phone Company in Wisconsin.  He was also employed as a correctional officer at the Walworth County Sheriff's Department in Elkhorn, WI.  Craig was united in marriage to Sharon Kowalski on July 3, 2005 in Whitewater, WI.  The couple lived in Wisconsin until moving back to Wayland last July.  Craig served on the Whitewater Fire Department for 14 years, where he was treasurer and a member of the Honor Role.  He was a member of the St. James Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, coached little league football at WACO and in Wisconsin, and served on the Whitewater City Council.  Craig enjoyed his family, was extremely proud of his sons, and loved his wife very much.  He was also proud to be a fire fighter and loved politics and history.

Survivors include his wife Sharon of Wayland, two sons, Carson and John of Wayland, parents, John and Rachael Stauffer of Wayland, one brother, Graig "Sprout' Stauffer of Wayland, nephew, Christopher Stauffer of Wayland, his parternal grandmother, Ruth Stauffer of Wayland, mother-in-law, Sandra Kowalski of Whitewater, WI., brother-in-law, Michael (Sara) Kowalski of Westfield, WI., sister-in-law, Kari (Brian) Ropicky of Portage, WI., and a number of aunts and uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Preceding Craig in death were his maternal grandparents, Maynard and Mary Whaley, paternal grandfather, John Stauffer, father-in-law, Mike Kowalski and nephew Jacob Stauffer.
