Doris Moore

A celebration of life for Doris M. (Grout) Moore, 90, of Kalona, will be held Thursday, May 25, 2017 at 10:30 AM at the Sharon Center United Methodist Church in rural Kalona with Pastor Erling Shultz officiating.  Burial will follow at the Sharon Center Methodist Cemetery.  Visitation will be held Wednesday, May 24 from 4 – 8 PM at the Peterseim Funeral Home in Kalona.  A memorial fund has been established for the Sharon Center United Methodist Church, the Pleasantview Home and Hospice of Iowa City.  Doris died Saturday, May 20, 2017 at the Pleasantveiw Home in Kalona.

Doris Marie Moore was born November 21, 1926 in Iowa City, the daughter of Harry and Neta (Southwick) Grout.  She was one of six children raised on a farm about eight miles northeast of Kalona.  Doris attended Sharon Township #6, also known as Bayertown school, and graduated from Sharon Center High School in 1944.

Doris Grout and Robert F. “Bob” Moore were married April 9, 1950 at the Grout Church.  They lived and worked in Iowa City for a year and a half before moving east of Kalona on highway 22.  Doris was a homemaker and together, Bob and Doris farmed in the Riverside, Iowa City area and enjoyed raising their two children, Diane and Dean.

Doris was an active member of Sharon Center United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school and was regularly involved in the United Methodist Women’s Society. Doris was a tour guide at the Kalona Historical Village for five years. She loved to be with her family and enjoyed traveling, visiting all the states except for New Mexico.  Doris will be remembered as a loving mother, wife, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt and friend.  She was tough, kind, generous and selfless.  “Everything suits me” was her choice phrase for going with the flow, which she was so admirably good at.  Her life of farming in the Midwest, raising children and seeing so many changes throughout the years made her the strong, wise, caring woman that we will all miss dearly.

Survivors include her children Diane (Keith) Davisson of Kalona, and Dean (Alyssa) Moore of Coralville, two grandchildren: Dana (Nick) Striegel and Ross (Jamie) Davisson both of Kalona, four great grandchildren: Delaney, Macey, Cody and Tayley, one sister-in-law Marilyn Grout and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding Doris in death were her parents, her husband Bob in 2001, three brothers: Lloyd, Earl and Edwin, and two sisters: Daisy Chipman and Mae Sullivan.

We are so VERY glad we stopped in Kalona on our way home from Florida in early May.We knew Aunt Doris was failing, but, she was pretty lucid for our visit and it was a blessing for all of us to give her our love, one last time. Aunt Doris was the youngest of my Grandpa Lloid's Brothers and Sisters and the last one to get her wings. She was only about 7 years older than my Mom, Janet, and as youngsters they enjoyed many hours playing together. Our heart goes out to Diane and Dean and their families. She will be mightily missed! You have all our love and prayers! We will see you tomorrow in Kalona. Amy and Janet

To Diane and Dean and your families, Doris was such a classy lady, who I always admired and respected. I always enjoyed helping her at the bank, and later when she moved to a cottage and then into Pleasantview Home I would stop in and visit. Thinking of you all as you celebrate her life.

To Doris's family: My prayers and thoughts go out to you during this time of remembrance. I always enjoyed being around Doris. I was in Alpha Club with her, and loved her shoe collection!!! What a delight. She was one of the sweetest lady I ever knew. Always had a smile for you and full of knowledge. Blessings to each of you and hang tight to the memories.
