A memorial service for Edwin D. "Ed" Heusinkveld, 88, will be held Sunday, April 24, 2016 at 4:00 p.m. at the Pleasantview Home Chapel in Kalona, Iowa, with Chaplains John King and Diane Brenneman officiating. A visitation will be held from 2 – 4 p.m. at the Friendship Center at the Pleasantview Home. A second memorial service will be held Monday, April 25 at St. Stephens Lutheran Church in Urbandale, with Pastor Dan Kuchuck officiating. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established for Mosaic (Lutheran based services for people with intellectual disabilities) and the Pleasantview Home Building Fund. Ed Heusinkveld died Thursday, April 21 at the Pleasantview Home in Kalona. The Peterseim Funeral Home is assisting the family with Ed's arrangements.
Edwin David Heusinkveld was born August 21, 1927 in Clinton, IA, the son of Edwin D. and Rose (Anderson) Heusinkveld. He graduated from Franklin High School in Cedar Rapids and Summa Cum Laude from Wheaton College, where he enjoyed singing in the Wheaton Glee Club. He also earned a PhD in Education at the University of Iowa. On June 8, 1957 he was united in marriage to Helen Rod in Story City, Iowa. Edwin served his country in the United States Navy in the Mediterranean and the Middle East. He spent his career as a college administrator at Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio and Grandview College in Des Moines, Iowa. Ed was a member of the St. Stephens Lutheran Church in Urbandale, and had served on the Polk County Health Services Board, the Convalescent Home For Children Board and the Bethphage Mission Board. Ed enjoyed singing, gardening, photography and collecting bird prints and puzzles. Ed was talented at Hardanger Cross Stitch, winning several blue ribbons at the Iowa State Fair.
Survivors include his wife Helen of Kalona, three sons: David (Gail) Heusinkveld of Kalona, Iowa, John Heusinkveld of Tomahawk, Wisconsin, Mark Heusinkveld of Des Moines, Iowa, four grandchildren: Evan (Mara), Kari, Molly and Julianna Heusinkveld, and one great granddaughter, Brooklyn Heusinkveld.
Preceding Ed in death were his parents and one brother, Richard Heusinkveld.
