Fred's presence was always what stood out about him. Whenever I talked with him during visits to Iowa - whether at his gas station, in his living room, or in the narthex of Kalona Mennonite - he was unfailingly gracious, wry in his humor, and welcoming to this stranger from out of state. He and Judy both have always defined the very quintessence of hospitality. May you all grieve well.

My heart goes out to Judy, Scott and Fred's brother, sisters and grandchildren. His gentle demeanor and positive spirit have been an inspiration to me since our friendship began as freshmen at IMS. I will miss him and always remember him as a trusted and close friend.
