James Riggs

James L, Riggs,86 of St. Joseph, Mo died Thursday,May 1st, 2014. Heartland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph, Mo.

A Celebration of his life will be 1:30 PM Saturday, May 17, 2014 at the Beatty Funeral Home in Washington. His body has been cremated and memorials in his name may be designated to Ebenezer United Methodist Church,7000 SE Hwy 169, Saint Joseph, Mo 64507.

James was born July 17, 1927 on a farm outside of Weatherby, Mo the son of Otis and Pearl (Fleming) Riggs. He moved to Stewartsville, Mo. and then to St. Joseph, Mo. He attended South Park Elementary, Roosevelt Junior High School, Graduated from Central. He was united in marriage to Lora Johnson in St. Joseph, Mo.

Served 42 years in the Army and Air Force, joining the Air Guard as Chief Master
Sargent. Jim retired July 17, 1986 . Then served as Communications Specialist
for the State of Missouri Air National Guard. Jim Graduated from Missouri
Western College with a Bachelor of Science.

Was a Scout Master for Troop 21 of St. Joseph, Mo. for several years. Jim loved taking care of his home and yard always starting new projects. He had a saying he lived by. “tis  better to wear out than rust out.” He was always looking for something new to  learn.

Jim delivered Vic’s popcorn and was a handyman for Liberty Sound, Arby’s and for
both locations of Funtan  a tanning Salon. All located in St. Joseph, Mo.
His hobbies consisted of Reading, Barbecuing and Oil painting. He was a long
time member of the Square Dance Club the Savannah Sashayers of Savannah, Mo.

Jim is survived by his wife Lora of St. Joseph, Mo, Children Dennis Riggs ( Wife
Ellen)of Saint Louis,Mo., David Riggs (Fiancée Shelly Smith)of Agency,Mo., Diane La  Follette of Hot Springs AR. Step daughter: Kathy Fewins of St. Joseph . Grandchildren: Devlin, James, Arianna, Josh, Dylan Riggs, and
Cameron, Evan, Stuart La Follette, and Step Grandchildren John, David, Robert
Martorelli. Great Grandson Sylas Riggs and Step Great Grandson Carmine
Martorelli.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a step daughter Susan Burke.
