A celebration of life for Lourene H. Yoder, 90, of Kalona, formerly of rural Iowa City, will be held Thursday, September 25, 2014 at 10:00 AM at First Mennonite Church in Iowa City with Pastors Bob and Mag Richer-Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City. Visitation will be held Wednesday, September 24, 2014 from 3 – 7 PM at First Mennonite Church in Iowa City. A memorial fund has been established for First Mennonite Church and Pleasantview Home. Lourene Yoder died Sunday, September 21, 2014 at Pleasantview Home in Kalona.
Lourene Helen (Bachman) Yoder was born March 10, 1924 in Lincoln Township, near Pomeroy, Iowa, to Aaron R. and Emma Elsie (Egli) Bachman. She married Arnold A. Yoder on September 5, 1943 in Manson, Iowa. Last year they celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. Lourene was a member of the First Mennonite Church in Iowa City where she taught Sunday school and bible school and was passionate about the bible memory program. She rewarded the kids for their memory work with a pizza/trampoline party every year. Lourene liked to write poetry for those around her at important times in their lives. She made the best cherry pies, apple dumplings, cinnamon rolls and haystack suppers. Lourene enjoyed sewing and quilting and could whip up a comforter for anyone for any occasion. She loved teddy bears, baskets, frogs and gardening. After God, her family was the most important part of her life and she especially loved the time she spent with her grandchildren having picnics, taking walks, overnight stays and sledding down the hill.
Survivors include a daughter in law; Bonnie Yoder of Ft. Dodge, IA, seven children; Emma Lee (Duane) Brenneman of Wellman, IA, James (Arlene) Yoder of Guffey, CO, Noreen (Stanley) Yoder of Parnell, IA, Reginald (Cheryne) Yoder, Steve (Pam) Yoder, Cheri (Eddie) Cole all of Iowa City, IA, and Don (Jane) Henson of Cotopaxi, CO, one sister; Dorothy Bender of Kalona, IA, 19 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren and seven great great grandchildren.
Preceding her in death was her husband on March 2, 2014, her son Gene, grandson Jeffery Brenneman, parents, five brothers: Elmer, Lyle, Melvin, Merle and Lloyd Bachman, and four sisters: Elna Brenneman, Lavern Slagle, Ellen Miller and Vilma Brenneman.
