A celebration of life for Maynard J. Smith, 72 of Iowa City, formerly of West Liberty, will be held Thursday, November 15, 2012 at 11:00 AM at the Peterseim Funeral Home in Kalona.  Visitation will be held Wednesday, November 14 from 4 - 7 PM at the Peterseim Funeral Home with a Masonic service at 7:00 PM.  A memorial fund has been established for the West Liberty Fire Department, Mt. Calvary Masonic Lodge #95, Iowa City Masonic Lodge #4 and the American Cancer Society.  Maynard Smith died Sunday, November 11, 2012 at his home in Iowa City following a brief illness.

Maynard Joseph Smith was born March 13, 1940 in Lone Tree, Iowa, the son of Dewayne and Alice (Zinkula) Smith.  He graduated from West Liberty High School in 1958.  On March 18, 1961 he was united in marriage to Waucile M. Maas in Rock Island, Illinois. After her death in 1998 he married Pat Zioberek on April 8, 2006.

Maynard was the Parts Manager at Wiele Cheverolet in West Liberty for many years.  He was a member and Past Master of the Mt. Calvary Lodge #95 of West Liberty, and served as secretary since 1973.  He was a member of the Iowa City Lodge #4, and Past Patron of the Lotus Chapter O.E.S. in West Liberty.  Maynard served on the West Liberty Volunteer Fire Department for 37 years, was a member of the First Church United of West Liberty and more recently attended First United Methodist Church in Iowa City.

Survivors include one daughter, Renea (Forrest) Frymoyer of Durant, Iowa, two sons, Randy (Charlene) Smith of Indianoplis, Indiana, and Roger Smith, two step daughters, Debra (Paul) Eckler of Indianapolis, Indiana, and Lori (David) Herring of Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, five grandchildren, Dustin Frymoyer and Kristin Sparbel, Shane, Shannon and Shawn Smith, five step grandchildren, Amanda, Samantha and Brittany Eckler and Taylor and Kelsey Herring.

Preceding Maynard in death were his parents, his wife Waucile, his wife Pat, three sisters, Mary Delige, Pat Bean, Betty Brown, and one brother, Daniel Smith.
