Shirley Waldschmidt

A Mass of Christian Burial for Shirley Waldschmidt, 85, of Riverside, will be held Friday, February 3, 2017 at 10:30am at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Riverside with Father David Brownfield officiating.  Burial will follow at the Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Riverside.  Visitation will be held Thursday, February 2 from 4 – 7pm at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Riverside where a Rosary will be recited at 2:45pm and a prayer service will be held at 3:00pm.  A memorial fund has been established for the Iowa Lion's Eye Bank and the American Cancer Society.  Shirley Waldschmidt died Tuesday, January 31, 2017 at the University of Iowa Hospital following a sudden illness.

Shirley Mae (Wieland) Waldschmidt was born December 9, 1931 in Washington, Iowa, the daughter of Henry and Alice (Kron) Wieland.  She graduated from St. Mary's Catholic High School in Riverside.  On August 7, 1951 she was united in marriage to Elmer Waldschmidt at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Riverside and the couple just celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary last August.  Shirley worked as a cook at St. Mary's and Highland schools, and later as a billing clerk at the University of Iowa.  She was a lifelong member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.  Shirley was a great cook and was known for her famous noodles, she also enjoyed baking cookies and kolaches, crocheting, and gardening.  Her family was her biggest joy and her daughters will miss her daily email messages.

Survivors include her husband Elmer of Riverside, five daughters: Diane (Al) Lowe of Riverside, Nancy (Greg) Sojka of Riverside, Cindy (Don) Becker of North Liberty, Linda (Scott) Frank of Riverside, Jean (Tony) Redlinger of Tiffin, 16 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and three sisters-in-law: Marjorie (Joe) Gase of Cedar Rapids, Carolyn Shalla of Kalona and Mary Waldschmidt of Lone Tree.

Preceding Shirley in death were her parents and two brothers-in-law: Cletus "Boots" Waldschmidt and Cliff Shalla.
