A mass of resurrection for Virginia M. Shalla, 84 of Wellman, formerly of Kalona and Richmond, will be held Sunday, September 16, 2012 at 2:30 PM at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Richmond with Father David Brownfield officiating. Burial will follow at the Holy Trinity Catholic Cemetery in rural Richmond. Visitation will be held Saturday, September 15 from 2-4 and 6-8 PM with a rosary at 7:30 PM at the Peterseim Funeral Home in Kalona. A memorial fund has been established for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Virginia Shalla died Wednesday, September 12 at Parkview Manor in Wellman following a decline in health. Virginia Maxine (Donaldson) Shalla was born April 25, 1928 in Washington, Iowa the daughter of Lloyd and Gladys (Warren) Donaldson. She graduated from Kalona High School and attended classes at Kirkwood Community College. She was united in marriage to Richard Shalla on May 1, 1948 at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Richmond. Virginia worked as the Deputy Clerk of Court for Washington County for 14 years, as a secretary at the Mid-Prairie Jr. High in Kalona, and as an accountant at the Thomas Miller Tax Office. She was a member of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church where she was instrumental in starting the Women's Guild. She served as an officer for the Women's Guild and as church secretary for many years. Virginia was a 4-H leader and enjoyed baking, especially decorating cakes, cooking, especially making noodles, playing golf, making flower arrangments, knitting, making homemade candles and sketching. Virginia served many Bohemian meals for the Washington County Historical Society. Survivors include her husband Richard of Wellman, five children and spouses, Sandra (Jim) Dougherty of O'Fallon, Missouri, Sally (Jack) Drumgould of Chicago, Illinois, Peggy (Paul) Basinger of Washington, Iowa, Dennis (Elaine) Shalla of Wellman, Iowa, Cindy (Jay) Thrapp of Wellman, Iowa, nine grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. Preceding Virginia in death were her parents and two brothers, Larry and Harry Donaldson.
