Daniel Miller

May 25, 1926 — September 24, 2016

A celebration of life for Daniel D. Miller, 90, of Kalona will be held Tuesday, September 27, 2016 at 10:30 am at the East Union Mennonite Church in rural Kalona with Pastor Joel Beachy officiating.  Burial will follow at the East Union Cemetery.  Visitation will be held Monday, September 26, 2016 from 4 – 8pm at the Peterseim Funeral Home in Kalona.  A memorial fund has been established for East Union Mennonite Church and Iowa Mennonite School.  Daniel died peacefully on Saturday, September 24, 2016 at Pleasantview Home in Kalona.

Daniel Duain Miller was born May 25, 1926 in rural Johnson County, the son of Henry H. and Mary Pearl (Gingerich) Miller.  He attended Prairie Dale School.  On March 30, 1948 he was united in marriage to Nita Miller at East Union Mennonite Church and they lived most of their married life on the family farm.  Besides farming, they also operated the lunchroom at the Kalona Sales Barn for 17 years.  Daniel was a lifelong member of East Union Mennonite Church, where he was involved with various church groups and activities.  He was also a member of the Johnson County Farm Bureau and served as a 4-H leader for many years.  Daniel enjoyed spending time with his family, reading, attending grandchildren's sporting and fine art events, family pie night, his coffee club and playing games.

Survivors include his wife Nita of Kalona, six children: Larry (Wilma) Miller of Harrisonburg, VA; Carolyn (Larry) Detweiler of Parnell; Jim (Deb) Miller of Coralville; Paul (Deyonne) Miller of Johnston; Paulette (Marv) Hershberger of Kalona; and Angela (Mark) Beary of Kalona; 11 grandchildren: Laurie (Derek) Yoder, Harrisonburg, VA; Andy (Lana) Miller of Harrisonburg, VA; Shantell (Theodore) Krabill of Parnell; Brian (Kari) Miller of Coralville; Jeff (Jessica) Miller of Nashville, IN; Alex (Megan) Miller of Urbandale; Abby (Nick) Shoeman of Waukee; Jonathan (Amy) Hershberger of North Liberty; Bradley (Alyssa) Hershberger of Kalona; Daniel Hershberger of Kalona; Katie Beary of Windsor Heights, 14 great grandchildren, two brothers: Quinten (Dolores) Miller and Paul (Laura) Miller both of Kalona, sister-in-law, Barbara Eichelberger of Hesston, KS. and a number of nieces and nephews.

Preceding Daniel in death were his parents, a daughter Nancy Jolene Miller and a brother Monroe Miller.
