Funeral Services for Dorothy Lucille Showalter, 84, of Kalona will be held Tuesday, August 16, 2016 at 10:00 am at the Kalona Mennonite Church in Kalona with Pastor Scott Swartzendruber officiating. Family visitation will be 2-4:00 PM and 6-8:00 PM Monday at the Kalona Mennonite Church. Burial will follow at the West Union Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established for the Kalona Mennonite Church Youth Fellowship (Mission Trips) or the Pleasantview Home in Kalona, where Dorothy was a resident at the time of her death, Friday, August 12, 2016.
Dorothy Showalter was born May 15, 1932 in rural Wellman, Iowa the daughter of Harry P. and Lala M. (Bender) Showalter. She attended rural school at Woodland and Daytonvielle, two years at Parnell High School and gradutated from IMS in 1950.
She worked at Maplecrest Turkey Plant, Yoder Feed Mill and University of Iowa Hospitals, retiring from there in 1994 after 34 years of service.
She was a faithful member of Kalona Mennonite Church. Served a number of years as Sunday School Secretary, as kitchen hostess and on the kitchen committee. She also served as a member of the Kalona Loiness Club and Mid-Praire Council of Churches Committee.
Hobbies included knitting, quilting, crocheting and traveling. She crocheted many baby caps and sewed lap robes for University of Iowa Hospital. Crocheted different Christmas ornaments for 28 years to share with family and friends. Travels took her to Yugoslavia, to Europe (where she saw the Passion Play) twice, Hawaii twice, Canada and various places in the US. One of her trips took her to Reedly, CA where she helped with fruit drying for Mennonite Central Committee. She also taught Bible School at various places plus at Kalona Mennonite where in later years she helped cook lunches for Bible School staff and children.
Survivors include brother Darrel Showalter and wife Janet of Kalona; sister-in-law Iva Showalter of Cedar Rapids, IA and Kathy Showalter of Mt. Pleasant, IA; nieces and nephews, Don (Vicky), Coralville, IA, Doug (Jean), Cedar Rapids, IA, Dean (Cindy), New Braunfels, TX, Dave (Cathy), Cedar Rapids, IA, Dennis (Sarah), Wayzata, MN, Delwyn (Marcia), Mt. Ayr, IA, Malcolm (Suzanne), Ankeny, IA, Kendall, Mt. Pleasant, IA, Jerilyn Winga(John) Mt. Pleasant, IA, Steve (Holly), Waukee, IA and Craig (Amy), Waukee, IA; 19 great nieces and nephews.
Preceding Dorothy in death were her parents, two brothers, Dale and Don and nephew Bradley.
