Funeral services for Emily Yoder Roberts, 94, of Kalona, will be held Friday, April 28, 2017 at 10:30 am at the Sharon Center United Methodist Church with Pastor Erling Shultz officiating. The body will be cremated following the service. Visitation will be held Thursday, April 27 from 4 – 7 pm at the Sharon Center United Methodist Church. A memorial fund has been established for the Sharon Center United Methodist Church. Emily Roberts died Tuesday, April 25, 2017 at the Pleasantview Home in Kalona.
Emily Yoder Roberts was born October 1, 1922 in Iowa City, Iowa, the daughter of Omar and Emma (Petsel) Yoder. She graduated from Sharon Center High School and trained to be a registered nurse at the University of Iowa. Emily worked as a nurse at the University of Iowa Hospital for many years. On September 11, 1948 she was united in marriage to Wayne Roberts at the Sharon Center Evangelical Brethren Church. Emily was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Jessamin Chapter where she had served as Past Matron, was a past president of the Johnson County Historical Society, and was also a member of the Questers and the Octagon Barn Questers. She was a member of the Sharon Center United Methodist Church where she served in many ways, including directing the Jr. Choir, singing in the choir, and teaching Sunday school and bible school. Emily had a passion for weaving and did spinning and weaving demonstrations at the Kalona Historical Society and the Midwest Old Threshers Reunion. She enjoyed horse riding and family canoe trips.
Survivors include her husband Wayne of Iowa City, three children: Nora Jane (Albert) Noellsch of Oregon, MO., Paul Owen (Julie) Roberts of Iowa City, Mary (Steve) Rathje of Cedar Rapids, two grandsons: Peter and Timothy Noellsch, four step grandchildren: Jennifer Newhard, Gwen, Josh and Kori Rathje, one sister Charlotte Lackender of Kalona, a brother Alan (Esther) Yoder of Ft. Wayne, IN., and a sister-in-law Betz Yoder of Kalona.
Preceding Emily in death were her parents, and infant brother Elmer, a sister Mabel Hora, three brothers and sisters-in-law: Glenn (Marjorie) Yoder, Calvin Yoder and Theodore (Jeanne) Yoder.
