James Marek

A Mass of Christian Burial for James R. Marek, 63, of Kalona, will be held Tuesday, May 2, 2017 at 11:00 AM at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Richmond, with Father David Brownfield officiating.  The body will be cremated following the mass.  Visitation will be held Monday, May 1 from 2-4 and 5-7 PM at the Peterseim Funeral Home in Kalona.  A memorial fund has been established for his granddaughters education.  James Marek died Wednesday, April 26, 2017 at the Washington County Hospital.
Born April 24, 1954, Jim was the son of Robert and Mary (Ruth) Marek. He graduated from Washington High School in 1972.  Jim was united in marriage to Mary Zahs in Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Richmond, November 27, 1982.  Jim farmed and, for many years, owned and operated Marek Trucking. He enjoyed farming, working with his cattle and driving his gator with his dog, Tucker. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family and baby-sitting his granddaughters.
Survivors include his wife, Mary of rural Kalona, his son, Cody Marek and wife Tammy of Washington; two granddaughters, Adlei Lynne and Kassidi Anne Marek; his mother, Mary Marek of Hills; three sisters, Patricia Greubel of Knoxville, Francine (Roger) McVeigh of  Unionville and Sherry (Sudharshan) Chary of Florida; two brothers, Gerard (Younglim) Marek of Chicago, Illinois and Wayne (Amy) Marek of Ankeny; several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews; a brother-in-law, Robert (Marta) Zahs of Iowa City and a sister-in-law, Patricia Zahs of Riverside.
He was preceded in death by his father, a brother, Joseph in infancy, a nephew and his wife, Joseph and Ashley Greubel, and his in-laws, George and Gladys Zahs.
