Lydia was born March 20, 1965, in Flint, Michigan. She was the daughter of Leslie Thomas Jr. and Uella Marie (Navarre) Firmingham. Lydia moved to Iowa in 1984 and eventually to Wayland where she lived at the WayMar apartments until 2012 when she fulfilled a dream of owning her own home by qualifying for a Habitat for Humanity home. Lydia worked hard to fulfill other goals such as becoming a CNA, getting a driver’s license and completing her requirements to graduate from high school by getting a GED. She was employed at United Presbyterian Home and Halcyon House, both in Washington and also by Parkview Home in Wayland. She was a faithful member of the Fern Cliff Evangelical Free Church and also attended Independent Bible Church in Wayland.
Lydia loved to learn and try new things. She learned to paint, sew, drive a car and garden. Her true passion was studying the Word of God and learning more about her Savior. She was never afraid to share her faith and ask others to join her in professing God’s love and mercy. Through all of her struggles in life she believed that God would always sustain her.
She is survived by her sisters, Penny Scott of Albuquerque, New Mexico and Connie Watson of St. Joseph, Missouri and aunts, uncles, and cousins. She was a wonderful aunt and adored her nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents. Lydia loved animals and is survived by her dogs, Zoey and Oscar and her cat, Muffin.
