Merlin Zwicki

April 19, 1937 — July 14, 2014

Merlin John Zwicki, 77 of Washington, died Monday, July 14, 2014 at Mercy Hospice in Iowa City.

Funeral Services have been set for 10:00 AM Thursday, July 17, 2014  at the Beatty Funeral Home in Washington with Pastor Jim Stiles officiating. Burial will be in the Elm Grove Cemetery with military honors provided by the American Legion Post #29. Visitation will begin at Noon Wednesday at the funeral home with family present from 5-8:00 PM. Memorials in the name of Merlin John Zwicki may be designated to Hospice of Washington County or the Washington United Methodist Church.

Merlin was born May 19, 1937 in rural Washington Co., IA the son of Otto F and Florence (Jones) Zwicki. He graduated from Ainsworth High School in 1958 and served in the US Army as a Specialist 5 from 1960 – 1962.   He continued his service in the Army Reserves for three years. Merlin was united in marriage to Beverly Ann Eyestone on November 18, 1962 at the United Methodist Church with Rev. Lloyd Latta officiating.

He was employed as a carpenter with his father-in-law Clifford Eyestone, did electrical work and was a mechanic at Loveless Implement and partsman at Sieg/Big A for over 20 years. He enjoyed his John Deere antique tractors, collecting toy tractors, working in his shop, making air powered engines and explaining how things worked.  Merlin took his antique tractors to numerous shows and parades. He enjoyed giving friends and family rides on his tractors.  He was a member of the United Methodist Church, the Wayland Area Tractor Club, Old Threshers Association of Mt. Pleasant, Prairie Land Association  of Jacksonville, IL,and the Good Sam Club.

Survivors include his wife Bev of Washington, daughters, Becky (Jim) Turnbull of  Rushville, MO and Susie (Mark) Beatty of Washington; six grandchildren, Jason Turnbull and fiance Shilo Brownell, Cody Turnbull and girlfriend Kenzie Olson,  Ashley Beatty, Blair Turnbull, Alaina Beatty and Alijah Beatty, one sister in law, Betty Zwicki of Washington, numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Donald.
