Omar Miller

March 21, 1908 — July 1, 2014

Celebration of life services for Omar F. Miller, 106, of Kalona will be held Saturday, July 5, 2014 at 10:30 AM at the Fairview Mennonite Church with Pastor Don Swartzentruber, Pastor Perry Miller and Pastor John Hershberger officiating.  Burial will follow at the Fairview Church Cemetery.  Visitation will be held Friday, July 4, 2014 from 2 – 8 PM at the Peterseim Funeral Home in Kalona.  A memorial fund has been established for Fairview Church, Pleasantview Home and Iowa City Hospice. Omar F. Miller died Tuesday, July 1, 2014 at the Pleasantview Home in Kalona.

Omar F. Miller was born March 21, 1908 in Johnson County, the son of Harry D. And Lizzie (Schlabaugh) Miller.  He attended East Lincoln School.  Omar was bapitzed in his youth in the Old Order Amish Church and was a charter member of Fairview Mennonite Church since 1936.  He retired from farming in the mid 60's and worked at numerous jobs, including helping the boys on the farm.  He was united in marriage to Laura Miller in September of 1929 and she died in 1988. After her death he married Mary Ann Gingerich in May of 1990.  Omar was a member of the Kalona Coffee Club, serving as President in 1969.  He enjoyed sitting on his porch and watching cars and people go by.  He also enjoyed telling stories and woodworking.  Omar was recently honored as the Grand Marshall of the Kalona Days parade.

Survivors include five children: Elva Miller, Ida Fern (Paul H.) Miller, Marvin Miller and Ellis (Marcia) Miller all of Kalona, and Miriam (David) Hershberger of Sarasota, FL.,  12 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, nine great great grandchildren and a special friend, Berdine Beckler of Kalona.

Preceding Omar in death were his wife Laura and wife Mary Ann, two brothers: Chris and Elmer Miller, and two grandsons: Doyle Miller and Steven Hershberger.
