Thomas “Tom” E. Bain, 79, of Wayland, died Saturday, September 5, 2026, at his home.
His body will be cremated, and no public service will be held. The Beatty-Peterseim Funeral Home is assisting the family. Memorials may be designated to Wayland Fire and Rescue.
Thomas was born August 28, 1947, in Washington, Iowa, to Ralph G. and Frances Elizabeth (Stalder) Bain. He graduated from WACO High School in 1965 and served in the U.S. Army in Germany and Panama. After returning home, Thomas worked for Crane Valve. He moved to Glendale, Arizona, in the early 1970s, where he owned and operated an exterminating service. He later worked at Walmart as a greeter and in the garden center. In 2013, he retired and returned to the family farm near Wayland.
Thomas enjoyed camping in the mountains, woodworking, selling his handmade wooden wishing wells at the farmers market, and touring the farm on his John Deere Gator. Survivors include his brothers, Donald Bain of Wayland and Gary (Loree) Bain of Sigourney; sisters, Barbara (Allan) Smith of Davenport, Kathryn (Mike) Furlong of Davenport, Linda Bredberg of Davenport, Nancy Bain of Santa Ana, California, Marlene (Greg) Pelster of Crawfordsville, and Lora Bain of Wayland; his longtime friend Judy’s children, Sandy and Ross; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Russell; sister, Mary Jo; and longtime friend, Judy Coffey.
