A celebration of life for Wendel Guy, 74 of Washington, will be held Saturday, April 26, 2014 at 11:00 AM at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Washington, with Pastor Maureen Howard officiating. Visitation will be held Friday, April 25, from 4:30 – 7 PM at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Washington. Wendel's body has been cremated and burial will be held at the Elm Grove Cemtery at a later date. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established for the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Friends of Lake Darling and the American Legion Post #29. Wendel Guy died Tuesday, April 8, 2014 at St. Lukes Hospital in Cedar Rapids. The Beatty Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
Wendel Guy was born September 17, 1939 in Brighton, Iowa the son of L. P. "Hap" and Mabel (Engel) Guy. He graduated from Brighton High School and later received an Associates Degree in sales from Kirkwood Community College. He served in the United States Air Force from 1958 – 1963. In 1964 he was united in marriage to Marla VaLeu, the couple later divorced and he was married to Lorraine (Spurgeon) Hughes in 1980. Wendel was a farmer and later worked at Yoder Feeds in Kalona, sold silos for AO Smith Harvestor, sold cars in Washington and Mt. Pleasant, was a rural mail carrier for route 3 in Washington, and was a stained glass artist. He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Friends of Lake Darling, Washington American Legion Post #29; where he was instrumental in organizing the color guard, Brighton Masonic Lodge, Order of the Eastern Star, Order of the White Shrine and the Shriner's. Wendel enjoyed collecting and riding Cushman Scooters, creating stained glass pieces, and spending time with his kids and grandkids. He took pride in providing graveside services for veterans, and was always willing to share his faith and help others; including providing rides to appointments for countless folks.
Survivors include his wife Lorraine of Washington, IA, two children; Nathan Guy of Cedar Rapids, IA, Angie (Rodney) Steckly of Kalona, three step children; Wanda (Roger) Hughes Pfeifer of Lawrence, KS, Theresa Hughes of Washington, IA, Yvonne Hughes of Maryland, eight grandchildren; Benjamin Gingerich, Haley, David, Malory, Shea, Ashley, Briley, and Brady, one great grandchild; Jeslynn, one brother; Lathol Guy of Brighton, IA, four sisters; Wanda (Jack) Mapel of New Mexico, JoEllen Schimmelpfennig of Forest City, IA, Nadine Taglauer of Fairfield, IA, Barb (Boyd) Stephens of Crawfordsville, IA, one sister in law; Mary (Gary) Lowry of Washington, IA, and three brother in laws; Robert (Wanda) Kientz of Germanville, IA, Dick (Charlotte) Morgan of Mesa, AZ, Don Hahn of Sigourney, IA, and a special friend; Tierna Stockley of Mechanicsburg, PA.
Preceding Wendel in death were his parents, a son in law; Scott Gingerich, one brother; Cedric Guy and three sisters; Mary Aletha Kientz, Chris Morgan and Vada Hahn.
